Subject: Slow Glass Catalogue #15
Status: O
Here is the Slow Glass catalogue #13.
Remember to let me know if you don't want this posted to you any
more (excepting those of you who requested the catalogue once only).
Feel free to forward/hardcopy this mail to anyone who is
interested. If you want catalogue back issues (#4 and #6 onwards),
I can arrange to have them e-mailed.
Remember, don't send your order to me (see disclaimer below). Send
them to Justin Ackroyd at Slow Glass Books.
Disclaimer: I have no connection with Slow Glass Books apart from
being an extremely satisfied customer. My comments in no way
reflect the views or policies of Slow Glass (and vice-versa).
This month's wretched random roundabout ramblings...

These are just my own thoughts as I flip through the catalogue.
Pay attention at your own risk!

Interesting new releases are:
Greg Bear; _Eon_ and _Eternity_
* _Eon_ was full of great ideas, but I got the feeling
that is was really a novella with lots of padding.
A really big artificial universe is found hidden
in an asteroid; the resultant exploration and discovery
takes up most of the novel. We eventually meet the makers
and find out something of their motivations.
* _Eternity_ may be worth a look if it expands on
the concepts and ties up the loose ends from _Eon_.
Gregory Benford; _Great Sky River_ and _Tides of Light_
* _Great Sky River_ was a joy to read. I've
heard nothing but good things about the sequel.
John Brunner; _The Compleat Traveller in Black_
* Widely regarded as a classic. Follow the mysterious
Traveller's journey as he establishes order in a land
of chaos.
Robert Silverberg; _Project Pendulum_
* This novel belongs to a series of juvenile works, each
produced by a different author. The only other one I've
seen was Zelazny's _A Dark Traveling_. Apparently
_Project Pendulum_ makes Zelazny's effort look like
the greatest English language novel ever. It isn't.
Roger Zelazny; _Knight of Shadows_
* The new Amber book. If you haven't read these, get
them. The Amber series is one of *the* definitive
parallel universe works. The surprising thing is
that, even though Zelazny keeps churning them out,
they are all premium quality.
Roger Zelazny; _This Immortal_
* _This Immortal_ was written by Zelazny at his peak
in the late 60's (and originally entitled
_And Call Me Conrad_). A post-holocaust Earth is
the setting for the ugliest hero you've ever heard
tell of giving an alien a guided tour of our planet's
past glories. Life gets complicated when the alien
is threatened by an unknown assassin and sundry dangers
along the way. A great read.
Local releases:
Poul Anderson; _Tau Zero_
* Around the universe in eighty days. Gods, I hated
this book. Some people, however, say it's good.
Terry Pratchett; _Guards! Guards!_
* Yet another Discworld novel. I've praised these
enough in the past, so I won't bother telling you
how good this series is again. Trust me. The only
worry is that Pratchett seems to be releasing one
every six months -- let's hope he kills the series
off before it becomes repetitive.
########################################################################
That's all folks!

THE BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS
___ TOR SF-O-N HC $28.50
Early in human history, a few
individuals are born to live out
their lives and then live on,
undying. They can be killed
like ordinary mortals, but are
otherwise immune to old age.
We follow several such people
through thousands of years,
skimming history until, at the
end of the twentieth century,
their immortality is revealed,
the rest of humanity attains
eternal life, and a utopia is
born on Earth. But the few na-
tural immortals, the survivors
of history, find themselves
alienated from the new order,
perfect, unchanging. And so,
loners for so long, they finally
band together for the great
adventure of space exploration.
Led by Hanno, the oldest human,
they travel to the stars and
meet the alien races of the
Galaxy, thus fulfilling the
promise of their heritage of
survival and adventure.

that leads right to the gates

the humble monastery in the
Valley of Sorrows has called
upon them to investigate the
brutal killing of a monk and
the theft of a seemingly incon-
sequential manuscript from its
library. Suspicion soon lands
on the infamous Laughing Prince
Liu Sheng, founder of the Valley
of Sorrows, whose murderous
frenzies have made his name
legend - but the Laughing
Prince has been dead for over
three millennia. Recommended.

complex computer system that
runs the economy. But when
Axxter accepts a really big
job - designing all-new military
imagery for one of the Cylin-
der's biggest and meanest tribes
- he begins a dangerous journey
that will take him to the far
side of the Cylinder and beyond.
Fast paced, with one of the
most ambitious constructs in

Shaddock.
MCCAFFREY, Anne
THE RENEGADES OF PERN
___ BAL SF-O-N HC $28.50
As long as the people of Pern
could remember, the Holds had
protected them from the Thread.
In exchange for sanctuary in
the huge stone fortresses, the
people tithed to their Lord
holders, who in turn supported
the Weyrs, whose dragons were
Pern's greatest weapon against
Thread. But not everyone was
part of that system of mutual
care and protection, particularly
those who had been rendered
holdless as punishment for
wrongdoing. And there were
some, like Jayge's trader clan,
who simply preferred the free-
dom of the roads. Others, like
Aramina's family, had lost their
hold through injustice and cru-
elty. Then, from the ranks of
the criminals and the disaffec-
ted, rose a band of renegades,
led by the Lady Thella, and her
quarry was Aramina who was
reputed to have a telepathic
link with dragons. But when
Thella vented her rage on
Jayge's family, she made a
dangerous enemy - for Jayge
was bent on revenge.

taineers exploring the great
mysteries of Nepal. Join them
as they encounter Buddha the
Yeti, Jimmy Carter, a tulku,

recommended.

___ TPB $12.50
SILVERBERG, Robert
PROJECT PENDULUM
___ BAN SF-R1-N $7.50
Project Pendulum is the first
practical experiment in time
travel. The nature of time
mechanics requires that the
two travelers' mass be precisely
matched. For that reason, the
first time travelers must be
identical twins. For paleon-
tologist Sean Gabrielson the
chance to journey back to the
age of the dinosaurs was worth
the risk. For physicist brother,
Eric, the chance to see 95
million years into the future
was equally irresistible. What
neither planned on was how the
inhabitants of those times would
react to their presence. Minor
Silverberg but still quite
interesting.
SMITH, Dean Wesley

When Karen White was young
she'd had the oddest dreams -
other worlds, other lands...
alien yet familiar. And the Grey
Man - vaguely threatening, lurk-
ing at the corners of her con-
sciousness, there yet not there.
As she grew up she learned to
suppress these frightening,
unwanted visions - forcing them
so deep it was as if they'd
never happened. But with them
she had to bury other, more
important, memories - her
family, their love, links and
past. And now she is grown
with a son of her own, and
suddenly she can no longer keep
these feelings and memories
hidden within. Because The Grey
Man has returned - this time
for her son. Can she awaken
long dormant abilities in order
not just to save herself but her
family as well? A beautifully
constructed and lyrical novel of
parallel universes. Highly
recommended.

A SPLENDID CHAOS
___ MND SF-R1-N $9.95
Zero, Bowler, Angie and Cisco
were strolling through night-
time New York City looking for
a good time. They walked into
a new rock club where there
was no cover charge, no mini-
mum, the music was loud, and
the drinks were free. They
laughed, they danced. They
discovered, then, with screa-
ming horror, that it wasn't a
club at all. It was a trapdoor
into an hellish world. Zero
woke up in an alien place and
found himself with a handful
of young Earth people, refugees
like himself, struggling to
survive. What follows is a
roller-coaster ride through
alien landscapes and clashes
with bizarre lifeforms, as Zero
searches for the creator of the
world. Not as good as some of
